Spring has sprung

When we are only allowed out once a day and are working from home, or aren't working anymore or can't get out, it can be easy to miss all the things bursting into life right now: the plants expanding their leaves and opening flowers, the insects that are appearing and the birds that are singing (do they seem louder than they did before, without all the human background noise?). Almost everyone has a green space of some sort nearby: a woodland or a park, a pond or a strip of trees, a garden or just one tree. Even just a walk along the street will reveal little green plants poking up from the pavement edges. The seasons are still turning.

Spring is not on lockdown.

I am lucky enough to have a small patch of woodland a few minutes walk from my flat in which I can take my daily exercise. I wanted to share some of the life that I am seeing there.

Have you ever noticed the flowers of a sycamore tree? They're small and green and don't last for too long, so aren't hugely obvious.

Prunus spinosa - blackthorn (sloe) - in flower

I am also very fortunate to have a garden at the flat I am in just now. The lawn is more moss than grass and has a greater number of plant species in it than you might imagine. I defy you to not be even a tiny bit cheered by the first bright yellow dandelion flowers in spring.
